Dr. Shinsuke Agehara

Associate Professor of Horticulture

Research and extension program of Agehara's group focuses on the development of vegetable and fruit production practices to improve productivity, product quality, and resource conservation. This program covers Florida’s major crops including tomato, strawberry, blueberry, bell pepper, and cucurbits, as well as new specialty crops such as blackberry and pomegranate. The research emphasizes understanding plant morphological and physiological adaptation mechanisms to environmental stimuli and stresses and incorporating the knowledge to develop integrated production practices.

Check out Dr. Agehara's Lab for more information on his current research efforts!

  • Research

Research responsibilities are to identify problems or opportunities and find solutions for vegetable and fruit crop industries in relation to: 1) abiotic stresses, 2) irrigation and fertilization practices, 3) cultural management and protected agriculture.

Research program covers major Florida’s vegetable (tomato, bell pepper, and cucurbits) and fruit (strawberry and blueberry) crops, as well as new specialty crops (artichoke, blackberry, hops, and pomegranate). The overall goal of this research program is to develop integrated crop stress management that improves the sustainability and profitability of the crops mentioned above by maximizing crop genetic potential and resource use efficiency. Research objectives are achieved by publishing research outcomes in refereed and non-refereed journal articles and by presentations at professional conferences.

  • Extension

Extension duties are directly connected to the research program and seek to provide educational programs on fertilization, irrigation, cultural management practices, and protected agriculture for vegetable and fruit crop production. The overall goal of this extension program is to support vegetable and fruit crop industries in Florida by supporting county extension agents for educational programs and disseminating relevant research results via reports and electric media (EDIS reports, popular articles, videos, and slides).
