Common plant pest problems: arthropods such as insects, mites and pill bugs; gastropods such as slugs and snails; plant diseases such as fungus, bacteria and virus.
Insects/other:  [alyssum] imported cabbageworm [Pieris rapae (Linnaeus) (Insecta: Lepidoptera: Pieridae)] may cause a problem (Featured Creatures, U. of Florida); [Dianthus spp.] aphids, mites, armyworms and cutworms; [geranium] aphids, four-lined plant bug, whitefly.  Other reported arthropods: tobacco budworm [Heliothis virescens (Fabricius) (Insecta: Lepidoptera: Noctuidae); twospotted spider mite [Tetranychus urticae Koch (Arachnida: Acari: Tetranychidae)]; cyclamen mite [Phytonemus pallidus (Banks) (Arachnida: Acarina: Tarsonemidae)], corn earworm [Helicoverpa zea (Boddie) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)] (Featured Creatures.  University of Florida.).
Common plant diseases/other: [alyssum] Pythium sp., basal stem rot; Rhizoctonia solani Kuehn, damping-off ; [Dianthus (D. barbatus L.)] Althernaria dianthi F. F. Stevens & Hall, stem rot; Botrytis cinerea Pers. ex Fr., gray mold; Fusarium spp. (predominately F. oxysporum Schlecht.), basal stem and root rot; Rhizoctonia solani Kuehn, root and stem rot; Sclerotium rolfsii Sacc., southern blight; Uromyces caryophyllinus (Schrank) Wint., rust; [geranium] Alternaria alternaria leaf spot; Botrytis cineria gray mold, Pseudomonas cichorii bacterial leaf spot, Xanthomonas campestris pv. pelargonii, bacterial leaf spot, stem rot, Fusarium sp;  Phytophthora sp., root rot; Pythium spp., black leg, stem rot; and Sclerotinium sp., stem rot.  Other diseases identified on crop: Bipolaris maydis leaf spot, petal spot; Cercospora brunkii, leafspot; Colletotrichum sp., leaf spot; Cylindrocladium scoparium, leaf and flower spot; Drechslera setariae, leaf spot and petal spot; Erwinia carotovora, bacterial leaf spot.  Glomerella sp., stem rot; Phyllosticta sp., leaf spot; Puccinia peargonii-zonalis, rust; plant viruses: crinkle virus, cucumber mosaic virus, tobacco ringspot virus and tomato ringspot virus; Physiological: edema ( Index of Plant Diseases in Florida.  1984.  Division of Plant industry. Honors:                     Best-of-class (BC).  We select the best performer in each class, based on the "overall rating".  This rating may not be high, if the class does not perform well; also, the rating may not be significantly different from one or more members of the class. If two or more members of a class received the same overall rating, we used another rating to determine BC.  If only one cultivar was entered in a class, it automatically becomes uncontested BC.  See "Research Papers" detailed information. In addition to BC, other "honors" received for these cultivars maybe added to BC at a later date, time permitting.  Seed companies may forward these honors (awards) to Rick Kelly. 
Rating System: Foliage and flower ratings are combined to generate the "overall rating" listed below for each cultivar within its class.  The rating is a 1 to 7 scale: 7- all foliage and flowers free from defects; 4- average foliage and flower condition, minimal plant defects or pest damage to tissue, but  still acceptable; 1- foliage and/or flowers with severe defects and/or severely infested with pests and damage unacceptable, making plant undesirable.  Plant death due to soilborne pests may be factored into the overall rating, if it is a significant problem.  Refer to "Research Papers" for details.  Generally, ratings with an "a" are the best in a class.  If cultivars share the same letters, those ratings are considered to be similar to each other.  If there are no letters, there is only one cultivar in a class or all the members of a class have similar ratings.
 
Seed was sown 10 October and transplants set in the fields on 3 December.
