What Is EDIS?

EDIS is the brainchild of the Extension Publications Task Force (1996). Its creation was the focus of one of their key recommendations:

"Develop the Extension Digital Information Source (EDIS) which will be THE comprehensive, single source reference of all current IFAS Extension Publications."

The Extension Publications Implementation Task Force subsequently addressed this recommendation. In their final report (March 1997) the committee elaborated on the EDIS vision as follows:

"EDIS will be the single, official source for printing hard copy, for electronic access through the web, and for producing electronic products, such as CDs."

EDIS is several things at several levels, both process and product:

  • A programmatic effort to deliver extension information through the Web, on CD-ROM and in print media.

  • An electronic database of current, official, reveiwed and approved, numbered publications.

  • A repository of files and images accessible through the Internet.

  • An electronic catalog of titles, availablility and pricing.

  • A collection of software tools for generating deliverable information.

  • A production system that produces printed materials on demand.

  • A Web site

  • An applied research effort to design the next generation of delivery systems.

There are many EDIS-related goods (the publications themselves, a Web site and various CD-ROM products) and services (such as the POW process and the activities of the editors and EDIS Librarian). Collectively, these deliverables comprise EDIS in the broader sense of a family of publication-related goods and services for information storage and delivery.
