UF/IFAS Plant City is Located in Florida's Technology Center The I-4 & I-75 interstate corridors intersect only a few miles west of the Plant City Campus. Together, these two interstate highways embrace and feed major industries and businesses addressing Florida's needs in high technology, agriculture, and natural resources. Agricultural properties which focus on cultivating major crops such as strawberries, ornamental plants, turfgrass, tomatoes, and citrus, along with the processing and transportation facilities that support their marketing, emanate from the corridor intersection and line these two major transportation arteries. Landscaping and urban horticulture businesses also figure prominently in this area and are a primary supporter of the campus. UF/IFAS & Hillsborough Community College (HCC) are uniquely positioned, in terms of location and technical expertise, to help meet the challenge of balancing the needs of both land development and environmental and natural resource protection. To address this problem, UF/IFAS and HCC began a partnership in 2001 to create an education, training, research, and extension initiative that will parallel and support the agriculture and natural resources industry sectors in West Central Florida. As a result of this partnership, place-bound students in West Central Florida have the opportunity to earn their lower division courses at HCC, or at any Florida public community college, then transfer to UF/IFAS Plant City to complete a Bachelors of Science degree without having to attend classes in Gainesville. |
