The tillers of the soil are the true pioneers of this world.

Agriculture Hall of Fame

Congratulations to Jim and Phyllis Gilreath, who will be inducted into the Manatee County Agriculture Hall of Fame on November 15th.  Both Jim and Phyllis have both contributed their expertise to agriculture for 25 years.  Jim Gilreath, retired professor (weed science) with the University of Florida, Gulf Coast Research and Education Center is known world-wide for his weed science/soil-borne disease research and, more specifically, his work with methyl bromide.  His wife, Phyllis, has worked with Manatee County Extension since 1982 and will be retiring this December.  Next year they plan to move to Greenville, South Carolina, back to Jim's home where he grew up. They have both been such an integral part of the agricultural community, they will be missed, and we wish them the very best in their retirement plans.

It's been a "red-letter" year for Dr. Natalia Peres!  In addition to the exciting news of her soon-to-be expanding family, along with receiving the William Boright Hewitt and Maybelle Ellen Ball Hewitt Award for her outstanding contribution to Plant Pathology, she has most recently been named an International Fellow.  Natalia has been selected for the 2007 UF/IFAS International Achievement Award and will also be submitted for consideration for the International Educator of the Year Award.  Congratulations, Natalia, for recognition of your high standard of achievement.
