Vegetable/Ornamental Plant
Pathology Website
Research focuses on vegetable and ornamental
diseases with an emphasis on bio-based control strategies.
Dr. Gary Vallad’s research and extension program focuses on the
diagnosis and management of diseases common to vegetable and
ornamental production in Florida with an emphasis on the development
and implementation of bio-based disease management strategies.
His research utilizes traditional and contemporary approaches to
study pathogen biology, disease epidemiology, and plant-pathogen
interactions. Current projects are focused on the management
of diseases caused by Alternaria spp., Corynespora
cassiicola, Fusarium spp., Sclerotium rolfsii, and
Xanthomonas spp. in vegetable and ornamental production, the
assessment of chemical and biological alternatives to methyl
bromide, and the characterization of tomato purple leaf disorder.
