Research focuses on vegetable and ornamental diseases with an emphasis on bio-based control strategies.

Dr. Gary Vallad’s research and extension program focuses on the diagnosis and management of diseases common to vegetable and ornamental production in Florida with an emphasis on the development and implementation of bio-based disease management strategies.  His research utilizes traditional and contemporary approaches to study pathogen biology, disease epidemiology, and plant-pathogen interactions.  Current projects are focused on the management of diseases caused by Alternaria spp., Corynespora cassiicola, Fusarium spp., Sclerotium rolfsii, and Xanthomonas spp. in vegetable and ornamental production, the assessment of chemical and biological alternatives to methyl bromide, and the characterization of tomato purple leaf disorder.
